Let the Journey Begin
Tsiyon Family Hospital (THF) is in Sayyi located in the Wakiso district, 22 miles from Kampala, the Ugandan capital. 20,000 people live in the areas and villages around Sayyi located in the Gombe division. The residents of this remote area had no local quality health care, too isolated to travel for treatment especially when ravaged by illness. The situation was made worse by the poor transport network characterized by dilapidated roads and few vehicles. Those people who did manage the arduous trip to the city would often be waved off with a simple aspirin regardless of their severe medical condition. Because of the lack of medical care, locals would often turn to home remedies, sometimes causing worsening health or even deaths. The mortality rate, especially that of women and children, was skyrocketing and had become a major cause of concern among the community leaders. Seeing the opportunity to make a difference, Building Up began the Tsiyon Family Hospital project.
Since 2021, when work on the construction of the hospital began, TFH has become more than a hospital. It is a beacon of hope to the community as a lifeline to addressing their health needs. Opening February 27, 2023 TFH has significantly enhanced healthcare accessibility for the men, women, and children of Sayyi and neighboring villages providing essential personnel and services that were previously lacking:
- Skilled medical professionals to address diverse health needs which previously had caused mortalities.
- Emergency medical treatment, providing a central hub for responding to health crises.
- Advanced diagnostics using precise and reliable laboratory equipment.
- Active malaria treatment and prevention program, combatting the formerly rampant disease, with incidents now greatly reduced through continuous mass sensitization, prevention, and infection treatment.
- Community-wide pre-natal healthcare, improving the wellbeing of both mothers and babies.
- Health education programs, promoting preventative care and empowering the community with knowledge to lead healthier lives through health fairs, outreach programs, and partnerships.
- A fully equipped labor-and-delivery suite staffed by midwives and doctors, ensuring safer childbirths.
In addition to fostering a greater sense of community wellbeing, TFH has played a major role in boosting the local economy. The construction phase injected funds into the community, supporting businesses, contractors, suppliers, and tradespeople. Also, through the hiring of local personnel for construction and ongoing health operations, TFH has created jobs, improving the livelihood of community households. Finally, the construction of TFH has not only provided a healthcare facility but also contributed to the overall infrastructural development of the area, improving the road network and utilities such as clean water and electricity. The Tsiyon Family Hospital has greatly impacted the Sayyi community. New lives have been brought safely into the world. Deaths have been prevented. Families are healthier. The economy is growing, and infrastructure is stronger. Building Up is committed to continue this life-giving transformation.
